The following species, field-identifiable superspecies/subspecies, and color morphs have already been documented and accepted in the Commonwealth of Virginia and are reviewable statewide except as indicated. The list follows the sequence of the American Ornithological Society Checklist of North and Middle American Birds, as revised through the 64th Supplement (July 2023).

Eastern Coastal Plain is defined as the following counties/cities: Accomack, Chesapeake, Gloucester, Hampton, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, Newport News, Norfolk, Northampton, Northumberland, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Richmond County, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Westmoreland.

Western Coastal Plain is defined as the cities and counties within the Coastal Plain that are not contained within the Eastern Coastal Plain definition.
